I grew up and studied photography and printmaking in Holland. In England I worked for many years as a painter and print maker.
One day, on a visit to Salisbury Cathedral, I was particularly struck by “The prisoners of conscience” window, painted by Gabriel Loire. Not having really ever paid much attention to stained glass before, I decided there and then to study the technique and try to make some myself.
One of the things that excited me was the way one can tell stories in glass, where the ephemeral quality of the material, part light, part substance, encourages the mind to make leaps of time and imagination. The skills in drawing and painting that I had built up I now apply to the painting on glass which lends itself to varied and subtle approaches. I enjoy combining this traditional technique with a modern approach to concept and design and keep discovering new challenges, new ways to do things.
