Born in St Ives Cornwall John Leach was apprenticed to grandfather Bernard and father David Leach between 1957 and 1963. In 1964/5 the pottery at Muchelney in Somerset was established making oil-fired functional ware.
John has established an international reputation for his hand-thrown, wood-fired oven-to-table stoneware. Alongside his standard work John, like his grandfather before him, also produces a limited number of signed, original pots; in particular his saggar-fired "Black mood" designs. With their invigorating, powerful shapes and minimal decoration, the pots transcend fashion and prove satisfyingly “right” in traditional or contemporary environments.
John has traveled widely in Europe and North America, lecturing and conducting pottery workshops.
His pots are hand-thrown using West Country clays and wood-fired at 1320deg.C. in a newly built three chambered climbing kiln designed by John in the Oriental tradition. is the result of the firing process.
