My career as an artist began in 1976. When I left school, I went to work as a stone carver at St Paul’s Cathedral. I subsequently went on to obtain an honours degree in sculpture at Kennington School of Art. I then went on to work as a conservator of ancient monuments at, among other places, Arundel Castle and Harewood House.
I progressed to ceramics ten years ago and enjoy combining my skills to produce a combination of sculptural pieces which include my “Green Man” range and finely thrown domestic ware which is finished in colourful glazes. I am influenced in my work by my interest in old buildings, particularly churches, and a love of nature and the countryside.
The Green Man image dates back to ancient Rome when in pre-Christian times trees were considered to be sacred. He first appeared in churches in the 4th Century and became widely used in the Christian Middle Ages. Although the original meaning of the image is not known, he is now regarded as a symbol of the Spring, renewal and regeneration.
