I produce sculptural forms comprising of multiple elements that address the relationship between the formal qualities of line, scale, shape, material, colour and texture. This body of work is influenced by architecture and the minimalist approach to form. I am particularly inspired by Modernist structures, with their clean sharp lines, simplicity of form and innovative use of materials.
Simple geometric shapes such as the square and circle are fundamental to all architectural design. This has inspired me to explore the possibilities that may be achieved by subtly manipulating these elementary shapes to create minimal sculptural forms with a rhythmic quality.
I aim to achieve a harmony between the formal elements, each complementing the other in a strong yet subtle way. The inclusion of glass and metal within the designs pays homage to the materiality of the architectural. The inclusion of grogs into the clay body makes specific reference to the substance of the built environment.
I employ a variety of processes such as slab building, press moulding, sanding, oiling and glazing, which enables me to further explore the materiality of my chosen medium of clay. Although the customary marks of the maker are not evident, the sculptures are still essentially and intrinsically hand made forms.
