NATURAL CONNECTIONS
Jan Lewin-Cadogan is a ceramic artist who lives and works in the beautiful valleys of West Wales. Having studied Ceramic Fine Art at The West Wales School of Art in Carmarthenshire, she holds a First Class Honours degree and is currently represented by galleries in both Wales and England.
Sculptural pieces of porcelain explore themes of time and change and the focus is on emergence and individuality through forms which are metaphors for the human condition, with all of its ambiguity and layers. We are all very similar in makeup, but are, in truth very different: We have variations in characters/personalities and are strong yet fragile. We develop at varying rates before becoming who we are, just like the seeds that shape plants/nature.
Each piece is unique with its own personality which can never be reproduced. However, it does belong to a family of work that share similar characteristics, using organic repetition/ repeat patterning themes that are abundant in the natural world. Each piece stands alone and whilst not multiples of one form, they work together to express and explore a coherent theme.
The main body of the work is porcelain paper clay, with touches of clear glaze and Gold lustre. The bases are slab built stoneware clay, which have been smoke-fired several times before polishing with natural beeswax to achieve a beautiful dark patina.
