I create a contemporary interpretation of the traditional craft of throwing.
My work has developed from the natural world, mainly floral forms. I have taken inspiration from closed buds and the way they relate when in clusters. My focus has also been on the changing relationship they have as they develop.
My aim has been to translate something delicate and fragile into something strong and robust; admittedly this is an expression of myself in the sense of their being two sides, one often being more prominent than the other.
I choose to throw as I find slip casting too cold and impersonal for what I wish to communicate. My all goes into every piece as each touch is done with love, care and consideration.
I use aggregates in my large pieces of work to create a stone or concrete quality. I hand sand and finish them at bisc then fire them to 1280c stoneware.
I try not to complicate my pieces with glaze. By using clear distinct lines and the simplicity of naked clay I hope the interpretation is easy to see.
