Raewyn’s inspirations come from many sources, the most predominant being a love of architecture, history and a less conscious, but no less important fascination for tidal landscapes. Having grown up by the sea in New Zealand and having lived half her life in London, these locations come together in her work.
You can see the excitement Raewyn has in working with clay from the trail of evidence she leaves behind. A variety of techniques are often used to create one piece, making each unique. From throwing tears through to imbedded textures and casting dribbles, all are assembled to create a narrative of memories.
Elements of industry have left fossilised imprints, whilst fragmented images of maps, drawings and postcards give clues of a journey. Her vessels and bottles look like they may have been found washed up with the tide along a coastline or at the bottom of a river bed.
She likes the idea of combining things old and new, of histories colliding to create work which is riddled with contrasts from past to present and industry to nature. In physical terms, she contrasts rough with smooth, shiny against matt and monochrome through to colour. Most importantly, she juxtaposes controlled making with the surprise of random chance.
