Clare makes unique stoneware pots, distinctive for the painterly exploration of colour and texture. Using T material (high quality, very coarse clay) that she mixes with smooth, white stoneware, she meticulously throws forms on the wheel, turning, and sometimes, altering them, when they are leather-hard.
She began her experiments with vitreous slips whilst studying at Bristol (UWE) and still finds it the perfect way to evoke the effects of light, time and weathering on architecture and artefacts, as well as dramatic land and seascapes. For colour, she mixes the three primary stains, to give an infinite palette. The layering technique she has developed provides a rugged, yet refined, texture to contrast with the smooth interior. She hopes that, for all the drama, her pots provoke quiet, calm reflection.
Since graduating in 1987, Clare has exhibited widely throughout the UK and abroad. She is a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association.
New work by Clare Conrad will be in the gallery and on the website shortly.
