Penelope's work is based very firmly in ceramics, as clay gives her a totally flexible material to work with. The direct involvement with the material without the use of many tools or equipment in the making process provides her with a very personal interaction with the material. This interaction enables her to develop her ideas through the skills she has acquired and am continually developing.
Her work is always a response to her own personal feelings and emotions and she frequently uses the human form as a vehicle for this expression. Her current work has developed following her husband's diagnosis with lung cancer when she decided not to make any work which would remind her of that period. Following his death, she was unable to touch clay for sometime although draw in her sketchbook. Eventually she was able to use these drawings to get back into working with clay again and her current work is a development or journey forward from that time.
