Sarah is a self-taught designer maker creating jewellery pieces that combine her handmade glass beads with traditional silversmithing techniques.
Each bead is made one by one of glass melted in a torch flame. Decoration is added in the form of dots or lines of molten glass applied to the base bead, with each layer melted in before the next is applied. Once finished the beads are annealed in a kiln for 15 hours to strengthen them, they are then either etched to create a matt finish or left with the traditional glass gloss.
The silver is often oxidised and hammered to give a worked rather than finished look, which complements the beads.
Sarah's influences are many: from childhood fairisle patterns and Iznic tiles seen in the British Museum; to 1950's textile and wallpaper designs and abstract artists such as Kandinsky and Klee.
Sarah lives and works in the World Heritage town of Blaenavon in the South Wales valleys.
