Shirley is a ceramic and mixed media figurative artist, inspired by dreams, ritual, dance, circus and theatre, particularly commedia dell'arte and Cirque du Soleil. Key influences have included Emma Rodgers, Michael Flynn, Alan Peascod and Alexander McQueen.
She has always been interested in the human form and loves all the costume and theatricality of the performing arts. Jesters are a recurring theme in Shirley's work. She is attracted by their interesting mix of frivolity and depth; they are clowns but often also highly perceptive and intelligent, sometimes becoming key confidantes of the people they are hired to entertain. Shirley loves Mickey Mouse for the same reason - he is a cartoon character but also has a serious side.
Currently living and working in Barcelona, Shirley trained at UWE, Bristol.
