Clare completed her first degree in History and Art in 1985 at Reading University and then worked in London as a production assistant for the BBC before travelling around South East Asia. In 1992-5, she lived in Japan and studied traditional Japanese Ceramics. She returned to the UK in 1996 and attained an MA in Ceramics at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff and set up her studio in Cambridge in 1997. In 2008 she achieved an MA in Fine Art Printmaking at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge.
She is fascinated by the intricate shapes and asymmetrical forms found in the landscape, particularly rhythmical and repetitive patterns that repeat themselves naturally on both a large and a small scale. Her appreciation of nature is in the details - fragments that suggest the idea that nature is an orderly process in the chaos of the natural world.
This study has led her to look at different ways of interpreting the world around her. She has been researching how the worlds of art, science and spirituality converge. Within her work she uses abstracted forms which offer reference to the landscape. Finding her own order in the chaos is explored through the notions of systems, mazes and mathematical patterns whilst maintaining a visual language of reduced and economical form.
