Valerie has had a long association with Bevere Gallery; she is a self taught artist and first joined the Bevere Vivis Art Group in the early 1980’s to help her get the measure of her talent and build up confidence in exhibiting. Since those first days she has been closely involved in the evolution of the group into the Bevere Gallery as it is today.
Valerie has dedicated herself to recording the flora and fauna of the British countryside in the demanding and challenging medium of watercolour. She loves working in graphite and the subtle technique of drawing in which she finds complete relaxation and the perfect tonal exercises for her watercolours. Pastels are another favourite medium and she uses them regularly when sketching from life.
Living in the city of Worcester she is surrounded by the beautiful Worcestershire countryside and its wild, and not so wild, inhabitants, which are her main inspiration. She is especially drawn to the natural and man-made waterways, which provide green corridors for a wildlife population under the constant threat of urbanisation. Throughout the year they provide much of the background material for her paintings.
Details of birds and animals are taken from dead specimens; usually found on the roadside, she then spends time in the field and rescue centre’s to study her subjects in the flesh. Valerie feels that just watching animals and birds after all the detailed study is the most important and rewarding element to her work.
Valerie has been influenced from very early age by the watercolour work of Archibald Thorburn, the drawings of Aubrey Beardsley and the paintings of the Pre Raphaelites, especially the drawings of Burne-Jones. Although her work has a very illustrative style she strives to create space and luminosity in her finished pieces.
Valerie’s work can be found at home and abroad in books, on greetings cards, fabric and china. She exhibits in galleries around England and is regularly invited to Nature in Art in Gloucestershire as an artist in residence. Valerie’s work can be seen at The Gallery at Bevere where she also teaches throughout the year.

Valerie is a well-known artist of flora and fauna. An enthusiastic teacher, she holds these small friendly workshops in the Stable Studio at Bevere Gallery. There is a maximum of six students of all ages attending the workshops with a minimum age 18 years. These workshops are designed to help the keen but hesitant student get started with the basics of watercolour and drawing and also for those who have some knowledge of the basics and would like to improve their skills.
Unfortunately the workshops are currently unsuitable for disabled people who cannot use stairs.
Valerie will teach you her techniques in watercolour, drawing and pastel setting projects to explore these mediums for a number of weeks during the term. She is happy to help you with the subject of your choice if you do not wish to follow a set subject or project.
Valerie always has a small supply of discounted art materials for sale and provides reference material for the workshops, but will send a detailed list of drawing/painting materials upon request.
Each workshop runs from 10am – 4pm with a break for a light lunch in the gallery café (included in the price). The cost of a day workshop is £44 per day with a 10% discount for 4 or more days booked.
Special rates are available for group bookings which can be booked on any day the gallery is open during the year, the price includes lunch and refreshments - minimum of 4 - max 6 Students.

Valerie is a well-known artist of flora and fauna. An enthusiastic teacher she holds small and friendly day classes which are a regular feature of the Bevere Gallery, Worcester year. These courses are designed to help the keen but hesitant student to get started with the basics of watercolour and drawing and also for those who have some knowledge of the basics and would like to improve their skills.

"This March I am concentrating my classes on drawing and painting animals, in particular fur detail. The classes are small and friendly, a maximum of six students of all ages. During the day I will demonstrate my techniques besides offering my help and advice on your chosen subject. I would be grateful if you could bring your own materials with you, but I will have spare paper etc available. I can send you a list of materials to buy if you are a beginner. Liquid refreshment is available during the day with a break for lunch. Please bring a packed lunch with you. During the summer I hope to run a couple of weekend courses details will be available later"
