As followers of the Bevere programme of featured makers will know, we were due to show the work of John Maltby in April. Sadly, John has not been well and has been unable to make any new pieces and we cannot therefore feature him as planned.
His health will clearly be a key factor in his ability to make again. He has been a ceramicist for over fifty years and we have benefitted from not only the quality of his work but the originality of his voice which has captured the hearts of so many ceramic enthusiasts. Of course we hope that he will make again but if that doesn’t happen his imprint on British ceramics is beyond question.
John Maltby, whose work needs little introduction, is one of the best known sculptural potters working in England. He has a quite distinct voice; often seen as quintessentially English it combines contemporary and traditional perspectives as well as humour and a sensibility that embraces family and heritage. His attention to detail and the quality of the finished piece is exemplary - he is very particular about what he releases into the ceramics marketplace.
He made domestic ware for some twelve years before working on the individual pieces which now characterise his output. It is a mark of his standing that his earlier work makes such good prices at auction and on selling websites.
New work by John Maltby will be in the gallery and on the website shortly.
