My practice as a ceramic artist begins with the act of drawing. It is through this physical process that I reach a greater understanding of the subject considered, and in a way, it becomes part of me. Architectural features, be they quietly decaying Doric columns of the Classical age or Victorian terracotta moulding, have always held a fascination for me; the contrasts of spare, often sheer surfaces with the intricacies of detail create a form of tonal sculpture through the interplay of light and shadow. These are effects that I seek to capture within my own contemporary pieces.

The physical action of making – the rolling out of clay, the joining of slabs, and the decoration of these new surfaces – is a reflexive stage in the creation of a piece, or series of pieces.

Intaglio, silkscreen and relief techniques employed in the decorative process are as equally important as the basic clay to me."
