Elke has always been attracted to traditional slipware as well as 18th and 19th Century porcelain. They are two very different styles, yet both have rich qualities about them and both have influenced her work from the beginning. She was already 35 years old when she finally left her career as a research technician to follow a long cherished idea. She came to England to study 3D Design Ceramics at Bath Spa University and graduated in 2003, followed by a Masters in Ceramics and Glass at the Royal College of Art, London in 2005.
Her work has always been about surface and colour. Everything can inspire her, consciously or unconsciously. It can be a painting, a song, and a bunch of flowers, an image in a magazine, a pot, or emotion.
One of her series brings together her love for painting and printing with ceramics. She calls it CAPRICCIO. Here she paints with slips onto a plaster block and then she pours clay onto it. Each time she lifts the firm clay a new print is revealed. She cuts and folds it into unique and cheerful vessels.
Since 2007 she has lived and worked in Germany.
