The ‘Endangered Species’ are a collection of ceramic animal sculptures that are hand–built, domestic in scale and unique. Each piece is modelled in high firing terracotta clay using a combination of pinching, slab building and coiling. They are decorated with bespoke sprigs, slips, underglazes, a sparkly lithium glaze and lustres and fired up to four times.
The animals are on wheels, as if they are toys. All too soon, if human beings do not change their actions, representations of these animals may be all that is left. Each animal has the essence of the animal it is depicting plus a dash of humour. This is a nod to the animals on wheels that children have played with since the early Dynastic Period in Egypt.
