Spencer Penn
The process of making is as much a part of the final outcome as the physical piece itself, says Spencer. Taking a lowly material such as mud; formless and dissolving, and creating an object able to convey a sense of simplicity and quietude.
The vessel is humble, yet capable of capturing time; its concentric lines cause the eye to move from foot, belly to the refined edges of a porcelain rim, creating a gentle rhythm and momentum moving the eye from within one piece to the echo of another, lulling the viewer into a state of calm and contemplation. Spencer Penn’s making is about the creation of humble open vessels that take their inspiration from oriental ceramics and have minimal decoration, letting the form of the work convey a message of simplicity and beauty.
