Emma’s work has been born out of a love of mid 20th century design aesthetics. Using industrial clays and a modular casting system developed throughout her Masters, her pieces are informed by the ‘béton brut’ concrete form work of brutalist architecture and the modernist shapes and textures found in Scandinavian glass design. She creates unique surfaces through material exploration and experimentation and contrasts these within each piece with bold forms and colourful glazes. No two pieces are the same, despite having been formed through a process of pressing or slip-casting clay into moulds. Having always worked in a small scale, in a very controlled way, her Masters gave her the opportunity to push herself beyond her comfort zone. This has led to much larger work and a renewed sense of freedom in her design development processes.
