After a career in engineering and management, Kevin started making pottery twenty years ago when his children left home to go to university. He makes functional and decorative stoneware and for the last ten years all his pots have been fired in a wood-fired kiln, adding salt and soda in the final stages to create and modify glazes. This has allowed him to find and develop glazes which provide the surface subtlety and complexity which he prizes.
Kevin has always been interested in the way that a feeling of energy and movement can be communicated in a ceramic which is essentially static. This can derive from the form and through surface designs, creating sweeping curves and dynamic lines. Many of his pieces are thrown on the wheel and then altered in shape. He creates his surface designs by using contrasting glazes and slips and the effects produced when these overlap provide additional interest and complexity.
Kevin is Chairman of West Forest Potters, a potters guild based in the area around Reading and Maidenhead. During the covid lockdown he made a video of a kiln firing for the members of West Forest Potters and put this on YouTube. To his surprise this video has now had over 30,000 views, prompted correspondence from around the world and been used in tuition at Clay College.
