Steve works from his studio in rural Herefordshire, where he creates distinctive and expressive ceramics. Before turning to clay, he spent 25 years living in London, working as an animator in film and television. Seeking a deeper, more tactile form of creativity, he transitioned to pottery, bringing with him a strong sense of form, movement, and storytelling.
Inspired by the simplicity and elegance of Japanese ceramics and aesthetics, Steve works primarily with high-fire, high-iron stoneware. His pieces are often glazed in Shino, a traditional Japanese glaze known for its rich, warm tones and unpredictable textures. Fired to cone 10 in a reduction atmosphere, his work emerges with a unique character shaped by both intention and the alchemy of the kiln — a kiln he built himself in 2023.
Steve’s ceramics reflect a balance of refinement and looseness, where precise craftsmanship meets organic spontaneity. Each piece embodies his deep respect for tradition alongside his desire to explore and push creative boundaries.
